Now in its second century of existence, the musical world of jazz is still a vital part of culture for many.Having begun in the multicultural environments of American cities, it has functioned as a vehicle for celebration, expression, and communication. It is also recognized as a metaphor for democracy itself.
We will take a look at some of the highlights of jazz’ first century, including major players and stylistic developments. We will also consider current trends and musicians, and the music’s bright future.
John Myers is a professional musician and educator. He plays jazz, Western classical, and other styles of music, and has composed many pieces, primarily in the jazz idiom. John has also composed music for multimedia and theater productions. He directs the jazz program at Bard College at Simon’s Rock. For more information on Professor Myers, click here.
