Herman Melville’s editor marveled at how much the writer knew of his surroundings; claiming “he knows every rock and bush.” Energetic, robust, charismatic, curious, Melville hiked and rode his horse all around the Berkshires. This four-class session will tackle some of those hikes that Melville made and helped inspire his writing. En-route, we’ll reflect on Melville quotes and talk about his life in the Berkshires, but mostly just walk. Hikes are easy to moderate in difficulty.
