This course is offered online via the easy-to-use Zoom program.
This course will trace the history of song-- both popular and art song-- in Europe, the Americas, and throughout the world. Without placing rigid boundaries, the emphasis will be on the short form song, typically three to five minutes long, as opposed to the longer vocal formats such as mass, oratorio and opera, although many examples will spring from those sources.
After fifty years as a self-taught musician, Brian Hailes graduated in May 2019 with a BA (Music) from Westfield State University where he focused on voice (bass-baritone) and composition. Early in his career Brian sang and played guitar in clubs and on radio in the UK, while in recent years he has sung in the chorus of Rigoletto and Don Pasquale with the Berkshire Opera Festival. He has served on the board of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Georgia Council for the Arts Music Panel. Brian previously worked in technology, has a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, a Diploma in Management Studies and is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology.
