Four Sessions

This course is offered online via the easy-to-use Zoom program.

Distinguished collectors Joan & Paul Gluck will compare and contrast the art and culture of three distinct First Nation tribes—Northwest Coast, Navajo and Hopi.  This course is based on 3 premises:

(1) Environment helps shape culture.

(2) Artistic expression is derived from the culture.

(3) Individual behavior results from cultural norms.

Over the past 50 years, Joan & Paul Gluck have collected art from these three tribal groups.  Examples from their collection, recognized by Art and Antique magazine as one of the top one hundred collections in America, will be used to illustrate these lectures.

Drs. Joan and Paul Gluck married as junior medical students at New York University.  On their six-week honeymoon, they logged over 7000 miles visiting National Parks and Native American sites, and were blown away by what they saw.  They splurged on their first piece, still in their collection, and began seriously researching and collecting.  Pieces from their collection were featured in the Berkshire Museum's 2016 exhibit "Finding Raven: Art and Stories from the Northwest Coast."  Both hold MD degrees from NYU School of Medicine, and Joan holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
