From colonial days, artists have found adventure, meaning and livelihood depicting the unfolding American frontier. This course discusses the lives and works of important artists, examining primarily painting, but touching also on photography and sculpture. As the country expanded westward, artists Audubon, Bingham, Catlin, Bierstadt, Russell, Remington and others found welcome audiences for their portrayals of distant, unfamiliar settings, often beautiful landscapes. The march of progress in an era of manifest destiny is a recurring theme, as artists were among the first concerned with land preservation and diminished native culture.

Ralph Pearson,  MPS Cornell (Hotel) and blissfully retired.  Three decades leading group tours worldwide. Managed hotels and Caribbean inn, while developing an incurable snorkeling addiction. Ralph is an beloved OLLI instructor focused on American and Canadian landscape painting.
