From colonial days, artists have found adventure, meaning and livelihood depicting the unfolding American frontier. This course discusses the lives andworks of important artists, examining primarily painting, but touching also on photography and sculpture. Asthe country expanded westward, artists Audubon, Bingham, Catlin, Bierstadt, Russell, Remington and othersfound welcome audiences for their portrayals of distant, unfamiliar settings, often beautiful landscapes. Themarch of progress in an era of manifest destiny is a recurring theme, as artists were among the first concernedwith land preservation and diminished native culture.
