W101 | New American Cinema (1967-1980) |
Deborah Reinisch

Wednesdays 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. | Six Sessions; 4/3, 4/10, 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8
In-person at the Triplex Cinema, Great Barrington

In this course, we will look at the masterworks of a new generation of filmmakers who reinvented American cinema while revitalizing a failing Hollywood. Against the backdrop of political and cultural upheaval, we’ll explore this period of astonishing creative and technical innovation with an eye towards what these 50-year-old films might tell us about our own turbulent times.

Students will be assigned two films per week to watch before class. These movies will be available to rent through a variety of streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Max, AppleTV, YouTube, etc.) or through local libraries on DVD. Free screenings of the films will also be available on campus at Berkshire Community College as a double feature on Tuesday afternoons before class. More details will follow.

Deborah Reinisch has produced and directed award-winning movies and series for network, cable and public television, including the Emmy Award and National Board of Review winner Andre’s Mother. Her recent network credits include Bull, Madam Secretary and NCIS: New Orleans for CBS. Her short film Sure Thing has screened at 27 film festivals including the Palm Springs ShortFest, the Cannes Short Film Corner, FilmColumbia and the Hamptons, Bermuda, Mill Valley, Woodstock and Napa Valley Film Festivals.

Prior to her work in television, Deborah worked as first assistant director on many feature films, including Blood Simple and Raising Arizona for Joel and Ethan Coen.

Deborah founded the Sundance/Silverman Fellowship for New Producers which became the basis for the current Sundance Creative Producing Initiative of which it remains a part. Deborah has taught directing, production, and film history at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Brooklyn College/Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema and Columbia University. In Fall 2023, she taught The Language of Film at OLLI at BCC.
