The Northern Berkshires provide its residents and visitors with unique geographical features that have inspired authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and others. Some have remarked that we live in a bowl surrounded by our mountains. There is Mt. Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts, the Natural Bridge Marble Arch, the Hoosac Mountain Range which holds the Hoosac Tunnel, lakes such as Bascom Lake, both natural and man-made. How was this area formed and when? We will go back in time to look at what we can learn about just how unique our environment is and how it influenced our economic growth.

Linda E. Neville holds B.A. degrees in English and History from North Adams State College (MCLA) and a M. Ed from Penn State University. She taught in the North Adams Public Schools and at MCLA in the Adult Education Program. In 1981, she was one of the founding members who revived The North Adams Historical Society and served as archivist for many years. At the family bakery, Neville's Donut Shop, she collected local oral histories of the Northern Berkshire community and has shared these stories both in her work and her writing. Linda has been a member of OLLI since 2015 and taught courses in the fields of science and literature.
