Whether you are traveling to Iceland with OLLI at BCC, or are just curious about this unusual country, we invite you to join this course.

  • Icelandic history from its first settlement by Vikings to the present will be taught by Marv Slind, a retired professor of history with a specialty in Scandinavia.
  • Iceland's landscape including active volcanos, geysers, and hot springs and the wildlife that make their home in Iceland will be introduced by wildlife conservationist, Gerri Griswold.
  • Today Iceland's cuisine is considered very sophisticated and Sharon Hudgins, a culinary historian, will introduce participants to both the history of scarcity in Icelandic diets and the boom in contemporary Iceland's adventuresome culinary scene.
  • Iceland's infrastructure was long neglected and Icelandic horses, with no predators, were bred to meet the many needs of Icelanders. Rebecca Daddona will introduce this unique breed of horses and the culture which has grown up around them.

Katherine Kidd, a long-time OLLI instructor, is the curator for this course. The instructors, introduced above come to us from across the US and the Berkshires.
