M101 | Learn to Paint a Landscape | Pamela Quirinale

Have you ever wanted to learn to paint, for fun and relaxation? This course will introduce you to the basics, while educating and inspiring. Working from a landscape photo of your choice, you will learn to quickly see, sketch out, and then paint, the landscape. We will cover use of line, shapes and color, all with water-based acrylic paints, on canvas. You'll also learn a bit about landscape painting in art history. Walk away feeling empowered with your new painting!

Supply list to be brought to first class:

  • 2-3 photos of a landscapes that appeal to you – should include a few buildings, such as houses or sheds; field or yards; trees and/or flowers; sky.  Photos should be at least 4”x6”.
  • Drawing Pencils – 1 standard #2, and 1 Ebony (darker).
  • Eraser – white
  • 1 set (of 12) colored pencils, such as Crayola brand.
  • Simple sketch pad – 9”x12”
  • Basic Set of acrylic paints, including (or adding on) Burnt Siena.
  • Brushes (3) – for acrylics:  Large 1”flat, Medium ½” flat, and Small ¼” flat.)
  • Canvas (already stretched and prepared): 16”x20”
  • Washable Palette(s) – such as recycled plastic lids, etc.
  • Water bowl or container, Paper Towels, and a Container for all the above.


Pamela Quirinale is multi-talented as both artist and musician. Her career as a painter/illustrator and art educator has spanned 40+ years. She has taught in public, private and parochial schools; art centers, community college, and at the Rhode Island School of Design. While at RISD she taught drawing, painting and mixed media classes both in continuing education, and at the Museum of Art. She has won awards in both illustration and mural painting.
