We will read and write a number of different types of poems beginning with a sonnet and continuing with narrative poems, poetry of place, poems about nature, poetry about art or photos, and humorous poetry. We will also discuss theory and publication. Readings will include poems by Shakespeare, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Seamus Heaney, Richard Hugo. Bring writing materials or a device to write on. A smart phone or Ipad will be useful for links to poems. Ed Meek is the author of four books of poetry and a collection of short stories. He has had work published in The Sun, The Paris Review, The North American Review, The Boston Globe, etc. He has an MFA from University of Montana where he worked with Richard Hugo. He taught American literature, creative writing and composition at Curry College and Austin Prep School. He writes book reviews for The Arts Fuse. He is a contributing editor for The Rivanna Review. His most recent book of poems is High Tide. |
