R103 | Selections from Ovid’s Metamorphoses | Jamie Keller Thursdays - 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. |
Back by popular demand: Ovid’s Metamorphoses! There is nothing better than reading the ancient myths when it’s cold outside our homes and inside our hearts. Their universal themes 2000 years old still resonate today: hubris, the plight of women, the role of the artist, and the rewards of kindness. Join me as we translate the myths of Daedalus and Icarus, Daphne and Apollo, Pygmalion, Baucus, and Philemon. The beauty of the Latin and the timeless tales unite past, present, and future. The only requirement for the course is having had some contact with Latin. If you haven’t looked at Latin since high school, no worries; we'll work our way through it together with joy and wonder. I am using the text, Love and Transformation: An Ovid Reader Ed. Richard A. LaFleur. If you prefer another text, however, that’s fine. Please read a brief bio of Ovid’s life and translate lines 183-195 of Daedalus and Icarus for our first meeting. Questions? Feel free to email me: jamiekeller54@gmail.com Suggested Reading: “In Other Words” by Jhumpa Lahiri. pgs.161-173. Jamie Keller: I received my BA from Washington University in Classics in 1974 and am All but Dissertation from SUNY Albany, 1978. I taught Latin for many years at the National Cathedral School, The Berkshire School and Lenox Memorial High School. Thanks to an outpouring of support, Latin still lives at LMMHS. My greatest accomplishment at Lenox was creating an exchange program with a school in Gubbio, Italy. I am currently a guide at the Norman Rockwell Museum. |
