Five Sessions




After an overview of the history and Evolution of theater in Spain this course will examine and analyze closely four plays. The first three will be the widely considered masterpieces of the Golden Age: Lope de Vega's "Fuenteovejuna;" Tiros de Molina’s "The Trickster of Seville;" and Pedro Calderon de la Barca's "Life is a Dream.” The last play will consider an important post-Civil War work: Antonio Bueno de Vallejo's "In the Burning Darkness."

Peter Podol earned his Ph.D.in Spanish Literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and then taught for over forty years in Universities in the State of Pennsylvania. He is the author of two books, chapters in six others over sixty journal articles and presented numerous papers and academic conferences. He has also been an invited speaker at universities in both Spain (the University of Oviedo among others) and the US (The University of Minnesota, etc.).
