R104 | Introduction to Opera | Christine Casey

This course will present one opera per class session, focusing on the composer, librettist, the origins and the first performances of the work, followed by a scene-by-scene slideshow with audio clips of an outstanding production of the opera. Additionally, challenges to the singers and noteworthy productions will be presented.

A native of the northern suburbs of Chicago, Christine Casey attended Northwestern University, where she earned two degrees in Music Education. She retired from public school teaching, having taught at Fenton High School in Bensenville, IL, where she was the choir director and department chair of music and art. As a soprano soloist, she has performed actively in the Chicago area. For the past twelve years, Christine has volunteered as a community and school lecturer, previously for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Opera Lovers Lecture Corps in Chicago, and recently in the Berkshire Community College OLLI program.
