Throughout history, the poetical language of religion and the spiritual life and the words we use to describe and express love, mystery, and awe have been connected in the heart, and through the heart, to what is deepest, noblest and most human about ourselves. Love and the spirit take endless forms, from the most juicily earthbound to the non-embodied and abstract divine. In these four classes, roughly divided into the themes of "Poetry of Yearning," "Poetry of Co-Mingling and Rapture,” "Poetry of Return" and “Not Yet Named, we will sample the wonders of both fleshly and mystical poetry, prayer and praise from various traditions, and seek to create similarly inspired expressions of our own.

Adam Phillips has made a lifelong study of poetry and spirituality, and has done so while wearing many hats. He was a career journalist for NPR and Voice of America (VOA) focusing on humanity and the arts, especially poetryHe has played the role of “celebrant” making liberal use of poetry in ceremonies marking milestone events. As an oral historian and legacy interviewer of many poets, including seven US Poets Laureate, Adam has explored his love of poetry. Adam has taught poetry with the New York Public Library, and has both written and edited poetry himself. Adam brings his heart to this work, and profoundly enjoys sharing what he knows and learning from others.
