Join us for a four-week course with three local artists who will explore their collage making process - how they conceptualize collage making, their influences, approaches, the materials they use and how this art form calls upon them personally. Their imaginative works can appeal to many of our senses, not just vision but touch and hearing as well.

Session 1, Mar 21:The Collage Mindset with Nicholas Holliday
A
collage artist will speak about his practice and work, addressing these
questions: Why collage? How do I go about it? How do I think about it, and what function
does it serve?
Dr. Nicholas Holliday is a Staff Psychiatrist at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, MA. He holds an ScB from Brown University and an MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has had solo shows at the Pavel Zoubok Fine Art Gallery in New York City, and has had short stories published in The William and Mary Review and The Portland Review.
Session 2 & 3, Mar 28 Apr 4 & Apr 18:Developing Your Own Collage Practice with Marney Schorr
This session will give an overview of the history and development of collage as an art form, and will introduce participants to the Soul Collage process. We will work intuitively and hands-on with images from magazines to create inspiring and meaningful collages for use in our personal creative practices. Please bring art and/or other magazines with interesting images, five pieces of 5x8 matboard or similar for a backing (such as white cardboard), scissors, adhesive, pens or markers.
Marney Schorr is a Teaching Artist & Art Therapist in private practice at NUarts Gallery & Studios and Director of Arts in Recovery for Youth(AIRY), an arts and skills based suicide prevention program for youth ages 13-24 in Pittsfield, MA. She holds a Masters in Clinical Arts Therapy from Long Island University, and received a 2018 Massachusetts Statehouse award for excellence in leadership of suicide prevention, a 2018 Berkshires Top 25 award, and citations from State Senator Adam Hinds and Representative Tricia Farley Bouvier. She is the author of the upcoming book When Art Saves Lives: A DBT-informed Art Therapy Approach to Youth Suicide Prevention(2022) with Jessica Kingley Publishers.

Session 4, Apr 11:CollageIncorporated: Art as a Daily Practice with Karen Arp-Sandel
This session focuses on the incorporation of collage into daily living. The visual presentation includes samples of Ms. Arp-Sandel’s artwork, along with a discussion of her life and philosophy as an artist, her techniques, her daily practice of art making, and the mixed-media aspects of her collage creativity.
Karen Arp-Sandel is an artist-activist and arts educator on the faculty at IS183 Art School of the Berkshires, the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, the Director of Vibrant Visionary Collage Community Programs, and Founder of the FeMail Art Network. She holds a BA from the University of Massachusetts – Boston, with additional post-graduate education in Graphic Design at the Penland School of Crafts. Her international outreach has been implemented through exciting programs in Jamaica, BWI, and in Rishikesh, India. An innovative educator for 35 years, Karen advocates for educational equity and social justice, and teaches art to amplify the creative voices of all people.
Barbara Turner Hart, RN (moderator) has a BS from Boston University School of Nursing and an MA from New York University School of Education. She previously worked as the Nurse Educator and then the Director of Nursing at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, MA before retiring in 2018. As a psychiatric nurse, she has always been interested in the forces that shape one's life. Jean Michel Basquiat, Lee Krasner and Romare Beardon drew her to the medium of collages. Collages communicate through fragmentation demanding that the viewer do the work of interpreting and finding meaning in different influences.
