The 2024 Solar Eclipse: How to Watch and What We Can Learn

Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern
Online via Zoom

What are the details about the coming Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024? What are the best ways to view it, and what can we expect to see? Where does this eclipse fit into the wider context of past eclipses and predictions about future ones? What can scientists learn from eclipses about the solar system and the universe beyond? These questions and more will be discussed in our Zoom session by Josh Lake, the observatory director and science department head at Pomfret School, a small boarding school in Pomfret, CT. Josh had quite an experience viewing the August 2017 solar eclipse with his family and is now preparing to bring a group of students to view totality this April. Bring your questions, your enthusiasm for this special stellar alignment, and your best hopes for clear skies on April 8th!

Joshua Lake is the Science Department chair at Pomfret School and he teaches astronomy and coding classes. He also oversees the freshman engineering program, teaching computer and maker space equipment skills. Josh's undergraduate study in astronomy launched his career in teaching science, and he earned his master's degree in Learning and Knowledge Management Systems (essentially 'teaching with technology'). Josh helped install and calibrate a state-of-the-art telescope in the observatory, making Pomfret one of the top astronomical sites in the area, and brought hundreds of visitors to the observatory to see the bands on Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, and incredible views of the Moon.
