Why would a person confess to a crime they didn’t commit?  What makes eyewitnesses identify the wrong suspect? How does police body camera footage shape jurors’ decisions? In this talk we will discuss the interdisciplinary study of psychology and the law, and psychological science can be used to explain events in the courtroom and other legal settings.

Yael Granot is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Smith College. Her research focus is psychology and law. She uses eye tracking and other experimental techniques to examine how people make legal judgements. She also explores how people develop attitudes about justice, and is currently exploring this in the context of adolescents’ experiences with school discipline and school-based policing. She received her doctorate in Social Psychology from New York University and her bachelor’s from Vassar College. At Smith College, she teaches courses on social psychology, research methods, and a seminar on the intersection of psychology and law.

Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members, and $15 for the general public.  Admission is free for Berkshire Community College students, youth 17 and under, and those holding WIC, EBT/SNAP, or ConnectorCare cards.

Pre-registration is required. Click here to register safely and securely online or call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card.
