Joe Trapani (he/him) is the Wanner-Hayes Family Professor of Biology at Amherst College, where he is a faculty member in the Biology Department and Neuroscience Program. He is also an affiliated faculty member in the Neuroscience and Behavior Program at UMass Amherst.

Joe joined the Amherst faculty in 2011. He earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, where his doctoral research examined the biophysical properties of potassium channels. He then moved to Portland, Oregon, for postdoctoral research at Oregon Health & Science University, studying how sensory hair cells and neurons transmit information in the lateral line system of larval zebrafish.

Research in the Trapani Lab focuses on how sensory information from the outside world is transformed into meaningful activity in the nervous system. Using zebrafish as a model, Joe and his students study the neural circuits underlying sensory processing, the startle reflex, and escape behaviors.
