Chesterwood, a Site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation since 1969, is the former summer home, studio, and gardens of American Renaissance sculptor Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). French created some of his most iconic work at Chesterwood, notably the seated Abraham Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. (1922). Chesterwood is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a Massachusetts Historic Landmark and has recently completed a four-year major restoration and renovation, all by local companies.
Enjoy a guided tour of the historic Studio, then venture down into the basement to see the sculptor’s system to bring his works outside to the natural light. Take a look at Daniel Chester French’s family living spaces, then view rarely exhibited sculptures and paintings in Collections Storage with the Curator.
