The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents

Climate Change and Human Migration: Intersections, Outcomes, and Responses
Serin Houston

Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. ET

Online via Zoom

Droughts, flooding, fires, extreme temperatures. Tens of millions of people on the move. Climate change and managing human migration are some of the most significant challenges of our times. Professor Serin Houston will examine the intersections of these two pressing issues in various contemporary contexts and from a geographic perspective. She will discuss the significance of terminology, such as the inaccurate and frequently deployed term “climate refugee,” and why it is important to use correct language for displaced people. She will also demonstrate why we need strong, collaborative, and creative governance to produce more equitable migration outcomes and to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Serin Houston is an Associate Professor of Geography and International Relations at Mount Holyoke College. Her research and teaching center upon critical migration studies and urban geography as she works to understand the processes, politics, and practices of creating a more equitable, just, and regenerative world.
