The story of the United States is the story of the city. Cities have played critical roles in U.S. history: cities have been foundational to ideas about race, sex, and gender. Cities are the sites and objects of intervention for local, state, and federal policy and political ideology. Cities are the critical terrain on which struggles for belonging and redistributive justice are waged. PhD candidate Brian Whetstone situates the city at the center of American history, arguing for the centrality of urban space to the American past and insisting that urban life is essential to our collective welfare in the future.

Brian Whetstone is a Ph.D. candidate in the History department at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst whose research focuses on the intersection between historic preservation, real estate, and the urban crisis of the 1960s and 1970s. His dissertation project examines preservation organizations in nearby Springfield, MA, and throughout the state of Massachusetts to explore how preservationists prioritized private property ownership as a strategy to respond to perceived rises in urban crime, white flight, the twentieth century Black freedom struggle, and the urban rental housing crisis. Brian currently serves as co-chair of the National Council on Public History's New Professional and Student Committee.

Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members, and $15 for the general public.  Admission is free for Berkshire Community College students, youth 17 and under, and those holding WIC, EBT/SNAP, or ConnectorCare cards.
