Public Attitudes Towards Immunization: Past and Present

Tuesday, August 23 at 7:00 pm EDT

Online via Zoom

The recent headlines have shown many Americans’ resistance to COVID immunizations and physicians’ explanations of the infection. This negative reaction to medical authority and treatment has occurred before in our nation’s history. In the past smallpox posed a public health risk to the American public. Eventually vaccinations eradicated the disease but not without resistance from citizens.

Marc Dawson received his A.B. from Duke University with majors in history and political science. He did all the Ph.D. graduate course work in African history and the history of medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was awarded a joint Ph.D. in History. He also studied epidemiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health for a year. His research has focused on the effect of socio-economic change on disease in late nineteenth and twentieth century Kenya. He served as an Assistant Professor of History at Union College, as well as, an Assistant Professor of the History of Medicine at Albany Medical College. He has been a faculty member at Western New England University since 1987, and served as the Chair of the Department of History and Political Science from 1990-2021. He currently teaches courses in African history, the history of medicine, the global pandemic of AIDS, and the history of technology
